Simplifier
At this very early stage, investors aren't looking for a finished product or big profits. Instead, they are looking for a "spark." They want to see that you have a great team that understands a specific problem and that the problem is big enough to be worth solving. It’s like showing someone a blueprint for a house; they want to know the builders are skilled and the neighborhood is a place where people actually want to live. Investors also look for signs that customers are truly interested in what you’re building. This could be a list of people waiting to use your app, a few early users who are testing a rough version, or even just interviews where potential customers say, "I really need this!" They want to see that you aren't just guessing, but that you have talked to real people who have the problem you are trying to fix. Finally, they look for "momentum," which is just a way of saying you are moving fast. If you can show that you built a simple version of your idea in a few weeks or that your user list is growing every day, it proves you can get things done. You don't need a giant oak tree yet; you just need to show a healthy little sprout coming out of the ground to prove that your idea has the potential to grow.
Visionary
At the pre-seed stage, visionary investors look beyond static spreadsheets to find evidence of a tectonic shift. We are searching for the "velocity of insight"—the speed at which a team decodes the future and validates a world-changing hypothesis. The most compelling metric isn't current revenue, but the clarity of the North Star. We look for a profound alignment between a massive, underserved future need and a team that possesses the unique foresight to navigate toward it before the rest of the world even sees the map. Traction is measured by the spark of a movement. We seek early signals of systemic change, such as a waitlist of "true believers" or evangelists who view the product not just as a tool, but as an inevitability. The key metric here is engagement depth: are these early pioneers using the solution to transcend old constraints? We want to see that the initial data points suggest a "point of no return," where the old paradigm becomes obsolete the moment your innovation is introduced. Ultimately, fundability is defined by the potential for exponentiality. We look for a roadmap that points toward a total transformation of an industry, supported by a viral loop or a structural advantage that allows the vision to scale without friction. We are not investing in the stability of a million-dollar present; we are investing in the trajectory toward a trillion-dollar future. The metrics that matter are those that prove your idea is the catalyst for the next great era of human or technological progress.
Sentinel
At the pre-seed stage, an investor’s primary duty is to identify and mitigate the inherent fragility of a new venture. We do not look for explosive growth alone; we look for evidence that the foundation is stable enough to support it. This means prioritizing "de-risking" metrics. We look for a team that has already secured its intellectual property, established clear founder vesting schedules, and demonstrated a deep understanding of the regulatory hurdles that could halt operations. Traction is measured by the quality of validation, not just the quantity. We look for high-intent signals such as binding Letters of Intent (LOIs), successful pilot programs with documented feedback, or a waitlist of verified users who have a high cost of inaction. These metrics serve as safeguards, proving that a genuine market need exists and that the startup isn't merely chasing a fleeting trend without a defensive moat. Finally, we examine the "burn-to-milestone" ratio. A fundable startup must demonstrate a disciplined approach to capital, showing exactly how the investment will be used to reach the next stage of stability. We favor founders who respect precedent and have accounted for downside scenarios, such as customer churn or delayed product launches. Without these safeguards, any capital injected is simply at too much risk.
